There is no federal ban on smoking, although Executive Order 13058 requires federal facilities to be smoke-free. Most states have laws limiting or banning smoking in public places, including the workplace. Illness caused by smoking costs employers in absenteeism, reduced productivity, workers' compensation, and lawsuits, so many employers are initiating smoke-free workplace policies and assisting employees who want to quit smoking.
